Important Reminder: If weather conditions become too hot during application and product is drying too quickly, STOP and wait for cooler application conditions.
Introduction
The success of any quality finish is dependent on proper surface preparation to achieve maximum performance. Before starting any project carefully read all the instructions in this guide pertaining to your project type to ensure that your WoodPlus finish maintains its long-lasting beauty.
Preparation of Surfaces
New Wood:
- Wood must be clean and dry. Remove all dirt, dust, wax, and grease.
- Sand with 60-80 grit sandpaper and a mechanical sander to remove millglaze. Remove all sanding dust prior to application.
Weathered Wood:
- Clean wood prior to coating with WoodPlus.
- If the surface is heavily weathered and graying, the surface must be sanded with 60-80 grit sandpaper to remove the damaged wood surface. Remove all sanding dust prior to application.
Previously Coated:
- WoodPlus may be applied over previously coated oil and water-based stains as long as they are in good condition.
- If the existing coating is peeling or flaking, remove it completely back to bare wood.
- For surfaces in good condition, clean with a commercially available cleaner (follow the label directions of the manufacturer) and power-wash to remove all dirt and surface contamination.
- Ensure the surface is clean and dry prior to coating. If a chemical stripper is used to remove the existing coating, make sure it isn't wax-based. Ensure the surface is clean and dry prior to application of WoodPlus.
Project-specific Instructions
Siding:
- Apply 2-3 coats of WoodPlus. May be re-coated after 2 hours, however 3-4 hours is the recommended drying time between coats.
- Apply a maintenance coat of WoodPlus every 3 years for southern or western exposure, and every 4 years for northern or eastern. Follow the preparation procedures for previously coated wood prior to application of the maintenance coat.
Decks and Horizontal Surfaces:
- Apply 1-2 coats of WoodPlus initially. Allow 3-4 hours drying time between coats. Allow a good overnight drying period before light foot traffic.
- Add a maintenance coat every 1-2 years depending on the amount of traffic and physical wear the surface is subjected to. Perform an annual inspection and if needed apply a coat of WoodPlus to any areas which may be wearing more quickly than others. Follow the preparation procedures for previously coated wood prior to application of the maintenance coat.
Fences and Garden Furniture:
- Apply 2-3 coats initially. May be re-coated after 2 hours, however 3-4 hours is the recommended drying time between coats.
- Apply a maintenance coat of WoodPlus every 3-5 years for southern or western exposure, and every 4-5 years for northern or eastern. Follow the preparation procedures for previously coated wood prior to application of the maintenance coat.
Log Homes (Kiln Dried, Manufactured):
- Apply 3 coats of WoodPlus.
Log Homes (Green Logs):
- Generally green logs have very a high moisture content, and will take a few years to dry out completely. These types of log structures should be allowed to dry a minimum of 3 months after completion before applying WoodPlus. Prior to coating, prepare the surface by power-washing with a commercially available wood surface cleaner. Allow the surface to dry for a minimum of 3 good drying days. Apply one coat of WoodPlus. If you have applied this first coat in the fall, wait until spring to apply a second and third coat. If applying WoodPlus in the spring, apply the second and third coats in the fall.
- Once the complete system is applied, apply a maintenance coat of WoodPlus every 3 years for southern or western exposure, and every 4 years for northern or eastern. Follow the preparation procedures for previously coated wood prior to application of the maintenance coat.
Application Tips
Do:
- Use a good quality nylon/polyester brush
- Apply liberal coats and saturate all end grains
- Maintain a wet edge and apply in the direction of the grain
- Perform a colour check on the wood being used in the project prior to application to ensure the desired colour is achieved
Don't:
- Don't apply in direct sunlight or when the surface is hot to the touch
- Don't apply in wet weather or when inclement weather is imminent
- Don't thin. The product is ready to use from the can.
- Don't apply at temperatures lower than 10°C (50°F) or higher than 30°C (86°F)
